How Much VRAM Do You Need for Gaming in 2026?

We read the official PC requirements of 29 big games released between November 2024 and October 2026 and turned every graphics card they name into its amount of video memory. 8 GB still clears the recommended spec of 23 of them, but it is now the floor, not a comfortable amount.

Good

8 GB VRAM meets the recommended spec of 23 of 29 games and the minimum of 29.

8 GB is what most publishers recommend. Expect to lower textures in the heaviest games and at 1440p, and to skip ray tracing in some.

Minimum only: Borderlands 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Mafia: The Old Country, The Outer Worlds 2.

Is 8 GB of VRAM still enough in 2026?

For 1080p at medium or high settings, yes. The clearest evidence is a same-chip comparison: Tom's Hardware tested the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB against the 16 GB version in 21 games. Same GPU, same speed, only the memory differs. How far the 8 GB card falls behind depends on the resolution and on ray tracing:

Average frame rate of the 8 GB RTX 5060 Ti vs the 16 GB card. Tom's Hardware, published Aug 14, 2025. Scale 0–45%.

The averages hide the worst cases. In the same test, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would not run above 1080p medium on the 8 GB card, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was 24.7% slower at 1440p ultra, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was 16.9% slower at 1080p very high settings.

TechSpot saw the same with AMD. In its January 2026 memory test, the 16 GB Radeon RX 9060 XT ran Spider-Man 2 with 35% higher average frame rates and 70% better 1% lows than the 8 GB version of the same card.

Our reading: 8 GB is fine if you play at 1080p and accept medium to high settings. If you are buying a new card in 2026, the extra money for 12–16 GB buys you years, not just frames.

How much VRAM do you need for 1080p, 1440p and 4K?

The requirements tell you what publishers aim for; the benchmarks show what happens when you go above it. Put together:

What fills your VRAM, and what to turn down first

Video memory holds everything the graphics card needs for the next frame. When it runs out, data has to come from system RAM over the PCIe bus, which is much slower, and you see stutter rather than a lower average.

What uses the most

  • Texture quality. The biggest single setting. It changes VRAM use far more than frame rate, so it is the first thing to lower on an 8 GB card.
  • Resolution. 1440p and 4K need larger frame buffers, which is why most 1440p recommendations ask for 10–12 GB.
  • Ray tracing. In the Tom's Hardware test, ray-traced games more than doubled the 8 GB card's deficit at 1080p and 1440p ultra. Indiana Jones, Doom: The Dark Ages and Gears of War: E-Day cannot run at all without a ray-tracing GPU.
  • Frame generation. Tom's Hardware saw DLSS Multi Frame Generation fail to work when the GPU was already at the limit of its VRAM.

What helps

  • Upscaling (DLSS, FSR, XeSS) renders at a lower resolution and reduces VRAM pressure. Several publishers write their requirements with upscaling switched on: Resident Evil Requiem, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Phantom Blade Zero all do.
  • More system RAM softens the stutter when VRAM overflows. TechSpot found an 8 GB card with 32 GB of RAM had over 60% better 1% lows in Spider-Man 2 than with 16 GB. More on that in our 16 GB RAM guide.
One trap: Pragmata recommends an 8 GB card, but its store page says ray tracing needs a 12 GB card (RTX 3060 12 GB or RX 6700 XT). Read the notes, not just the GPU name.

FAQ

Is 8 GB of VRAM enough for gaming in 2026?

For 1080p at medium to high settings, yes: 8 GB meets the recommended spec of 23 of the 29 new games we checked and the minimum of all 29. At ultra settings, 1440p or with ray tracing it costs performance; Tom's Hardware measured an 8 GB RTX 5060 Ti 11% slower than the 16 GB version at 1080p ultra and 18% slower at 1440p ultra.

Is 12 GB of VRAM enough for 1440p?

Yes, for every game in our list. The highest recommended spec we found is 12 GB, from Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Mafia: The Old Country, two of which target 1440p. 16 GB gives headroom for maximum textures and ray tracing.

How much VRAM do I need for 4K gaming?

Plan for 16 GB. None of the 29 requirement lists target native 4K, but in Tom's Hardware's test the 8 GB card was 42% slower than the 16 GB version at 4K ultra, and some games would not run at all.

Does more VRAM give you more fps?

Only when you were running out. Two versions of the same card perform almost the same at settings that fit in the smaller one: at 1080p medium the 8 GB RTX 5060 Ti was just 2.3% behind the 16 GB card. The gap appears once a game needs more memory than the card has.

How do I check how much VRAM I have?

On Windows 11, open Task Manager, go to Performance and select your GPU. "Dedicated GPU memory" is your VRAM. You can also run dxdiag and look at "Display Memory" on the Display tab.

How we researched this

We copied the minimum and recommended GPU of 29 big PC releases from their Steam store pages, then took the VRAM of each card. Performance figures come from Tom's Hardware and TechSpot; we quote them, we did not re-test them.
